About Us

Welcome to our website.

Arizona Regional Medical Center (ARMC), Mesa is the newest hospital in the state of Arizona. The story of ARMC is both compelling and unique - it was born out of a need to fill a void for medical services in northwest Mesa, following the closure of two long-standing hospitals in the area. This prompted local physicians, led by Dr. Robert Siegel and his colleagues, to come forward and take a leadership role in restoring vital healthcare services to the community. [ read more ]

Arizona Regional Medical Center Becomes a National Training Center for Revolutionary Incisionless Surgery Procedure for Reflux

Mesa, AZ (January 22, 2010)

Dr. Tanja Gunsberger and Arizona Regional Medical Center were honored among the ranks of national incisionless surgery training centers Friday as they hosted their first class of surgeons who came to Mesa to train in the revolutionary TIF procedure, a completely incisionless surgical treatment for chronic acid reflux also called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Arizona Regional Medical Center was designated as a training center in January 2010 for Transoral Incision-less Fundoplication (TIF) using the ESophyX device. TIF is based established principles of surgical repair of the antireflux barrier except that it is "surgery from within" performed transorally (through the mouth). The TIF procedure reduces hiatal hernia and creates a valve between the stomach and esophagus restoring the natural, physiological anatomy to prevent reflux. Because the procedure is incisionless, there is reduced pain, shorter recovery and no visible scar. Surgeons from several states observed procedures with Dr. Gunsberger and were coached while they practiced the procedure on inanimate models.

Arizona Regional Medical Center joins a respected leading edge network of Incisionless TIF training centers including major teaching centers across the country such as the University of Miami, Ohio State University and Northwestern University.

"This is a procedure that I believe can help thousands of people who suffer from GERD. By training these surgeons, we are helping to bring this procedure into the mainstream." "this innovative procedure is clinically important because it hastens recovery and reduces side effects such as the potential for infection as there are no incisions."

"The procedure is safe, but it is important to provide exceptional training for surgeons on a new technique." "It is quite an honor to have these surgeons, who could train anywhere, choose Arizona Regional Medical Center to receive their training for this form of advanced surgery. It demonstrates that we have established a proven team with an outstanding track record who can now teach this revolutionary procedure to other surgeons who are anxious to receive this advanced training."

Brent Cope, Chief Executive Officer of Arizona Regional Medical Center said the hospital is "excited" about it’s role as a training site for Incision-less surgery." "This teaching opportunity showcases the confidence the medical community places in the hospital and our ARMC team."

The T.I.F. procedure is available at the Mesa and Apache Junction locations of Arizona Regional Medical Center. Please contact Cara Rawlings, Community Outreach Liaison & Patient Care Services at 480-223-4170 for additional information.

Open to the public

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) affects approximately 30 million Americans. Some studies report that as many as 1 in 4 adult Americans will suffer some symptoms of GERD. GERD is associated with injury to the inner lining of the esophagus due to an abnormal reflux of acid from the stomach into the esophagus. In most cases, the disease is caused by weakness of the muscle between the stomach and the esophagus so it fails to contract, allowing stomach contents to move back into the esophagus. The acid nature of the contents causes the "heartburn" typically associated with GERD. [ read more ]

Community Outreach: ARMC Sponsors Lowell Elementary at Tenth Rotary River Rally

On April 18, 2009, Tempe Town Lake hosted the 10th Rotary River Rally featuring The Great Cardboard Boat Regatta. ARMC is proud to have sponsored Mesa's Lowell Elementary School for the event. Teams build full-sized boats made of nothing but corrugated cardboard, then up to 8 children and/or adults get into them to paddle along a 200 yard race course on Tempe Town Lake. Some sank, some swam, but everyone had a great time!
